As part of the SHARE program, each family of children in grade one through eight is obligated to sign up for three (3) days of noon prefecting (recess duty) or cafeteria prefecting. These days will count as three (3) hours of the family’s 30 hour obligation. Kindergarten parents are obligated to sign up for one (3) days of cafeteria prefecting. When prefecting, please observe the following guidelines. These guidelines are to insure the safety and well-being of the children when on the playground, in the gym, or in the classroom.
- Parent prefects will be needed on the playground, classroom, or in the cafeteria from 11:40a.m. until 12:25 p.m. If prefecting on the playground, please check into the office by 11:35 a.m. to pick up hall/restroom passes and review the list of playground rules. If prefecting in the cafeteria, please check in with Barbara Riddle by 11:35 a.m.
- There will usually be two-three parent prefects on duty on the playground or classroom as well as two teachers. Please check in with one of the teachers in charge. One of the teachers will supervise the upper grades (5, 6, 7, 8) on the field; and the other teacher and the parent prefects will supervise the lower grades (1, 2, 3, 4) on the blacktop and on the play equipment. Please circulate among the children.
- Hall/restroom passes are to be given to students one at a time, not in groups (unless a student has been asked to help another student with a minor injury). NO student is allowed in the school building without a pass given by one of the prefects on duty – consequence: WHITE (WARNING) SLIP.
- Key words on the playground are COURTESY and COOPERATION. When using swings, basketball hoops, tether ball, and play structures, students should be aware of sharing the equipment with other classes. If sharing becomes a problem, the time can be divided between the two classes – each class having 10 minutes.
- Parent prefects should feel free to enforce the playground rules. If they do not feel comfortable doing this, the matter can be referred to one of the teachers on duty. Following are some guidelines for breaking playground rules: for the FIRST INFRACTION the student should be WARNED by a teacher or parent prefect. For ADDITIONAL INFRACTIONS, the student should be made to STAND AGAINST THE WALL after which he/she should come up with a plan to avoid the inappropriate behavior. If the violation is FLAGRANT (unsafe behavior, refusal to follow directions, fighting) the student should be referred to one of the teachers on duty.
- On rainy days (determined by the teacher in charge and announced before the students leave the classroom for lunch/recess) the teacher in charge will supervise the students in the gym (two classes). The parent prefects will help in the gym. The other two classes will be supervised by another teacher in the Library.
